Wednesday, December 21, 2011: The Longest Night

Wednesday, the longest night of the year and the official first day of winter, will begin with a candlelight vigil in downtown Flagstaff. Flagstaff Shelter Services, several local churches and others have together organized the third annual homeless persons’ memorial service. The service will begin at 6 p.m. at Flagstaff Federated Community Church at 400 W. Aspen Ave., and will end with a candlelight procession to Heritage Square. Prayers, music and poetry will be offered for those who have died homeless in Flagstaff over the past years and for those still living on Flagstaff’s cold streets.
The observation is in conjunction with National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day which is observed each year on Dec. 21. Organizers of the Flagstaff event have identified at least 20 people who died while homeless in Flagstaff since 2000.
